On September 14, the Icelandic minister of tourism, industry and innovation, Þórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörð Gylfadóttir, came to visit the Icelandic Textile Center. After an introduction to the Center and its current projects, Þórdís Kolbrún took a closer look at a coat made by Guðbjörg Þóra Stefánsdóttir, fashion design student at Central St. Martins in London and research assistant at the Textile Center.
In 2020, Guðbjörg worked with weaving expert Ragnheiður Björk Þórsdóttir on "Bridging Textiles to the Digital Future", the Textile Center's three-year research project funded by the Icelandic Technology Fund. Digitizing old Icelandic weaving patterns and sample weaving on the Textile Center's Tc2 digital loom were part of the project. The pattern of Guðbjörg's coat, woven on the digital loom, was inspired by two traditional patterns, now accessible via the
project's weaving database. The coat is made from Icelandic wool and sustainable cotton and dyed using natural colours.
