Kamilla Michelle Henriau

Kamilla Henriau graduated from the Iceland University of the Arts with a degree in product design in 2023. Her project "Áseta" was supported by the Student Innovation Fund and presented at the Textile Center's exhibition "Ullarheimar" in Blönduós in September 2023.  Kamilla used the equipment in the TextileLab to experiment with different materials during the summer of 2023. 

The project Áseta is a development of local, natural fibers for upholstery e.g. in furniture. In the past, natural materials such as hay, wool, horsehair, and more were used for upholstery. With the advent of the plastic foam, it has taken on a primary role in soft furnishings. However, it is well known that it has many disadvantages, especially regarding its environmental impact and can not be recycled.

The project draws inspiration from old upholstery methods, materials and processing. Based on the project’s philosophy and material experiments, the emphasis was placed on second-class wool and the processing of curled horsehair. These materials are both by-products of the meat industry. Horsehair is not utalized, and second-class wool is mostly exported for a low price. In the project, ways of further processing these materials were developed, and it was discovered that the properties of the materials complement each other very well. The softness of the wool and the springy features of curled horsehair create excellent upholstery materials. There is a lot of work involved in cleaning and spinning/curling horsehair, but if this process were industrialized in Iceland, similar to what is done abroad, there would be significant opportunities for utilization and innovation with this material.

Kamilla Henriau útskrifaðist frá Listaháskóla Íslands með b.a. í vöruhönnun 2023. Hún vann að verkefninu Áseta sumarið 2023, styrkt af Nýsköpunarsjóði námsmanna og í samstarfi við Textílmiðstöð Íslands. Kamilla kom tvisvar í TextílLabið til að nýta sér aðstöðu og vélar í rannsóknarverkefni sínu. Lokaafurð verkefnisins var sýnd á sýningu Textílmiðstöðvar Íslands, Ullarheimar í september 2023.

Verkefnið Áseta er þróun á náttúrulegu, staðbundnu innvolsefni til notkunar í t.d. húsgögnum. Fyrr á tíðum voru náttúruleg efni svo sem hey, ull, hrossahár og fleira notað til setu. En eftir tilkomu plast-svampsins hefur hann verið í aðal hlutverki í mjúkum mublum. Plast-svampurinn hefur þó marga ókosti, sá stærsti hve óumhverfisvænn og óendurvinnanlegur hann er. Verkefnið sækir innblástur í gamlar aðferðir bólstrunar með vitnun í efnivið og vinnslu.

Út frá hugmyndafræði verkefnisins og efnistilraunum var áherslan sett á annarsflokks ull sem og vinnslu krullaðs hrossahárs. Þau efni eru bæði hliðarafurð kjötiðnaðarins, hrossatögl eru ekki nýtt og annarsflokks ull er að mestu seld ódýr úr landi. Í verkefninu voru þróaðar leiðir til áframvinnslu og komst ég að því að eiginleikar efnanna vinna mjög vel saman. Mýkt ullarinnar og fjöðrun krullaðs hrossahárs mynda einkum gott innvols efni til ásetu. Enn er mikil vinna fólgin í að hreinsa og spinna/krulla hrossahárið en ef það ferli væri iðnvætt á Íslandi líkt og gert er erlendis væru miklir möguleikar í nýtingu og nýsköpun með efnið til framtíðar.

Hér má sjá tvær frumgerðir af sessum úr efnablöndunni, annarsvegar þar sem efnunum er raðað upp í lög (hrossahár/ull), og hinsvegar þar sem efnunum er blandað saman (hrossahár+ull).
