The balaclava is a tight-fitted garment designed to cover your head, neck and shoulders and only expose a part of the face. Not only are they great in winter weather (think ski mask!), but balaclavas are quickly becoming the fashion trend of the season. So we've decided to jump on the bandwagon and make the balaclava (Icelandic: lambhúshetta = "sheephousehat") and "The Hidden People of Our Times" the theme of our Iceland Knit Fest design and knitting competition 2022!
Here are the rules:
- Design and knit a balaclava for an adult. The theme of the competition is "The Hidden People of Our Times" and should be kept in mind when designing.
- The design must be new; it is not permitted to use previously published knitting patterns or patterns. Please include the story behind your design when submitting the project (computer-written print-out).
- The balaclava must be hand-knitted from Icelandic wool.
Please send the finished project to: The Icelandic Textile Center, c/o Svanhildur Pálsdóttir, Árbraut 31, 540 Blönduós, marked with a synonym. Make sure to enclose a sealed envelope with your actual name, address and telephone number. This information will be treated as confidential, of course, and not shared with any third party. Deadline for submissions is May 1, 2022.
A jury will then select their top three; the winning designs will be displayed and prizes awarded during the Iceland Knit Fest in June (10-12). Fantastic prizes from Ístex, Tundra, Vatnsnesyarn and Rúnalist await!
